Introducing Northern Colorado's Newest Roller Derby League
You may have seen them on the track, whipping past you. You may have glanced up from traffic at some point, only to spot eight lime green wheels keeping up with your car on the side of the road. Disguised as professionals, mothers and students by day, they emerge with alter-egos and a passion for hip-checking by night: They are the Choice City Rebels.
The Choice City Rebels is Northern Colorado's newest revolutionary roller derby league. Comprised of twelve experienced roller derby women, the league aims to be a competitive travel team, and will play the likes of cities such as Colorado Springs and Denver in the near future. They are committed to winning, working hard, and having fun.
Roller derby culture has exploded into the world of mainstream, with movies such as Whip It being released, as well as the countless leagues that have developed over the last ten years. Since first appearing on public television in the 1950s, the sport’s rules have changed slightly but the object remains the same: The jammer, donning a star on her helmet, must break through the pack of skaters in order to score points on her second lap around the track. For each skater that she passes on the opposing team, her team scores a point. Blockers and hitters make up the defensive line up, as well as two pivots, who hold the pace of the pack. The object of the game is to prevent the opposing jammer from getting through, and the results of these attempts can be both exciting and brutal; it’s not uncommon for a pair of roller skates to go flying through the crowd.
The Rebels guarantee action-packed home games, working together in order to find that elusive hole for their jammer to sneak through at the last second. They'll do whatever it takes to grab that final score. Watch out for them; you may think you've never seen them before, when in fact they might be around you at this very moment. The only way to know for sure, though, is to come see them play at their first bout.
The Rebels will be playing Greeley's own derby league, Slaughterhouse, on December 4th, 2008 at 7pm. The bout will be held at OD'S Sports Crossing, LLC. Tickets are $10 or $13 DOE, Kids 10 & under are free. They are also available at The Bean Cycle, OD'S, Speakeasy Studios or on-line at Brown Paper Ticket.
