Gainesville Roller Rebels

Everyone who plays roller derby knows that they have a family of people that will be there for them no matter what they need – be it a hug, a ride home (from practice or jail….), a place to sleep, someone to motivate you to get off your butt and go to practice or just to listen. But as derby girls, we also know that this awesome family extends beyond our own league. No matter where you travel, there is another derby family that will welcome you with open arms. It is for this reason that it’s important for us to help those in our family who are in need.

As some of you may have already heard, Tallahassee Roller Girl Danger S, (a.k.a. Stephanie Little) has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 cervical cancer that has spread throughout her body. The Gainesville Roller Rebels are planning to hold fundraisers and collect personal donations for Danger S and we would like to invite other leagues around the U.S. to do the same. She does not have insurance, so every little bit helps. Danger S’ derby wife has started a charity fund to support her and other cervical cancer patients and to promote awareness about early detection. GRR would love to see every league support this cause, even if it is only a few dollars. When times are tough, even a few dollars can make a huge difference.

Spread the Love (http://www.stlcharity.org/) -- a 501(c)(3) charity started by the Tallahassee Rollergirls in support of roller girl Danger S -- is dedicated to fundraising in order to support patients and families fighting cervical cancer and promote awareness of the importance of early detection through regular testing.

From the Spread the Love web site:

“On October 28, 2009 Stephanie (Danger S) was diagnosed with stage 4 cervical cancer.”

“(Danger S has undergone) surgery to determine the cause of the liver failure. To everyone’s relief, it was due to a blockage. The doctors were able to eliminate the blockage and return her liver function. While Stephanie is slowly recovering from her liver failure, she has a long fight with cancer ahead of her. The cancer has spread and wrapped around her spine, and nearly all of her lymph nodes are affected.”

“This charity was born from the love of Stephanie’s derby wife and her fellow teammates, and is fueled by the beauty and strength that we have all witnessed in Stephanie. She is an inspiration to us, and we hope you will help her continue to inspire others.”
